Family Day

My husband, Jared, is a hospice chaplain.  This means that he is with families and their ailing members in the final stage of life.  It's an incredible job.  It requires compassion, calm, and a propensity for passing on peace for the variety of dramas that accompany illness and death.  In the event that chaplaincy is a new field to you, you may not know that it requires a bachelor's degree, plus a Master's degree -- the special kind that take three years instead of two, and years of supervised field training.  In total, Jared has trained for 12 years for his career... to make $48,000 a year.  Most people who go to school that long are, what?  Physicians?  Yeah.

Still, it matters that he's found the thing that he is best at for his career.  He really has.  He's finished what is probably his final unit of Clinical Pastoral Education.  For the last 10 months, Jared has been gone nearly every Saturday to nursing homes and trauma hospitals for additional certification.  He. Has Loved it.  (I say this is proof that something is wrong with him, but to each his own.)

Our four-year-old, Micah, and I have loved it a little less.  It's been really nice to see my husband advance himself and do something he loves.  It's meant for me and Micah that we don't have that other member of our family for weekends.  We got what amounted to a one-day weekend as a family.  So, we made a big deal out of that day, Family Day.

Micah has learned about Days of the Week at school this year.  At school he had a number of songs, his favorite of which you can watch below, to learn about the days of the week.  He doesn't exactly get how calendars work, yet, but he does understand that each day is its own thing.  For example, we go to church on Sunday, then three sleeps later, it's Church Day again, when we're back for music and Bible stories and playing with friends.

This week, finally, is our first weekend with two Family Days.  We've built incredible train tracks, made oatmeal with raisins (Micah loves cooking) and literally run all over the house.  We've been up for hours and haven't budged from our pajamas.  Eventually, we'll put on clothes and head to our local farmers market where we'll mingle with neighbors and pick our own produce for the week.  Then, who knows?  Personally, I'm hoping the swing that's been stained and in our garage for a year will be put up.  Whatever we do, we do together today.

Congratulations to my hubby on a job very well done.  We're so proud of you.

What are you doing for your Family Day?
